Bilpin Springs Apple Picking + Apple Chips Recipe

Before the brunt of winter hit we made a trip to the foothills of the blue mountains to Bilpin to go apple picking. We made the pilgrimage the previous year to the same orchard, Bilpin Springs which has granny smith and sundowner apples. Both varieties of apples are great for baking with, so of course a good proportion of the $35 worth of apples we came home with were used to make cakes, pies and apple chips. Click below to hear more about our apple picking adventure and for an apple chips recipe that is easy and tasty. Bonus, it will make your home smell amazing!

We love taking the kids to do things like pick your own as we find they really love the experience of learning where food comes from and getting to eat straight from the source. May is the best time of year to go apple picking here and by the first week of June most pick your own places have closed, so it's best to get in there early.

Beautiful morning light in the orchard.

Just grab a basket and off you go. The price per kilo was pretty similar to in store at our local grocery store, so you don't do pick you own for the price, more for the experience.

Gorgeous ruby red Sundowner Apples

There were plenty of apples to choose from even though the owner said it was the end of the season when we went, so don't worry if you can't get there first thing as the fruit is plentiful and delicious.

Charlie bear was a pro at picking apples and eating them!
Our loot!
Cinnamon Sugar Apple Chips

Ingredients

3-4 Granny Smith Apples (thinly sliced)
2 teaspoon cinnamon
4 tablespoons sugar

Step 1: Preheat oven to 100 degrees Celsius. Place the sliced apples on a baking sheet lined with non-stick baking paper. Make sure to space them apart from each other and don't overlap.

Step 2: Mix the cinnamon and sugar together and sprinkle half of the mixture over the apple slices.

Step 3: Bake for 1 hour, then turn over each apple slice and sprinkle with the remaining cinnamon sugar. Return them to the oven.

Step 4: Bake for another 1 or so until they are crisp. Remove from the oven and allow to cool. Store in an air tight container.

Yum!

I have a few recipes to share with you that we used these beautiful apples in, so check back over the next few days for another delicious apple treat.

Happy Picking!
